Gates protect remaining investors from a fund being forced to sell assets at bad prices to meet a rush of redemptions. Fund-level gates apply to total redemptions; investor-level gates cap what any one investor can redeem per period.
Gates are disclosed in advance in the offering documents. A gate that is actually imposed is a significant event and is usually reported to all investors.
