Lock-ups give a manager stable capital while a strategy is established and protect other investors from the cost of early exits. Hard lock-ups prohibit redemption outright; soft lock-ups permit it on payment of a redemption fee, usually 1% to 5%, that goes to the fund rather than the manager.
Lock-ups are disclosed in the offering documents and are a standard item in an allocator's liquidity review, alongside notice periods and gates.
