The professional-investor test is what allows a fund to be exempt from retail investor protections. Equivalent categories exist elsewhere: accredited investor and qualified purchaser in the United States, professional client under MiFID in the EU, wholesale investor in Australia. An investor must meet the definition in the fund's domicile and comply with the rules of their own jurisdiction.
Verification of status is part of onboarding, and a fund must compulsorily redeem an investor who ceases to qualify.
